Here Is My Take On The Career Of One Of The Finest Batsmen (AB De Villiers) Ever To Represent South Africa.
Devilliers commonly known as Mr.360 in Cricket played his first test match back in 2004 against ENGLAND making 28 & 14 in two innings. He was a hardworking cricketer. Few Cricketers improved so fast and Devilliers was one of them. He was Naturally a very talented player. One of his best abilities that makes him best is his ability to play fearless cricket. Regardless of the pressure of the situation, Devilliers used to bat according to the demand of the situation. We have seen him bashing world-class bowlers so many times all around the park. We have seen him scoring the fastest centuries as well as we have seen him saving his wicket for the whole day of a test match.
He was the batsman who lands in-ground and just starts playing his natural game taking no pressure on the situation. Although the stats proved that he failed to score big in some crucial knockout matches for South Africa he is still the biggest MATCH WINNER South Africa has ever produced.
In his early days, he was lucky to share the dressing room with some of the big names of South Africa like Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis, Graeme Smith, Makhaya Ntini. He was groomed well by South Africa cricket and turned out to be their greatest match-winner.
Test Career – Devilliers Test Cricket Numbers Are Staggering:
- Matches: 114
- Innings: 191
- Runs: 8765
- Hs: 278
- Avg: 50.66
- 50’s: 46
- 100’s: 22
- 200’s: 02
He made his Test debut in the home series against England in 2004 and exhibited his class with a sublime 52 in just his fourth innings when South Africa was in deep trouble. He scored his first test century (109 runs) against England in SuperSport Park, Centurion. In his first away tour to West Indies, he proved his talent scoring 460 runs. He scored two hundred 178 & 114 on that tour. He already had played at the opening as well as in a middle-order position. He was a confident batsman against World-class pacers too.
In 2008 When South Africa visited INDIA, he scored magnificent 217* to become the first player from South Africa to score Double Century against India. He also becomes MOM in that match.
AB Devilliers has another double century in test career, that came in Abu Dhabi in November 2010. He scored 278 not out in that knock. We all know him for his destructive style of batting, having scored the fastest ODI 50,100 & 150. It was SA vs IND 4th test in Delhi ( Dec 3-7, 2015). With more than a day’s play to go, SA had to chase a big total and they were absolutely on knees against the home side. But AB DEVILLIERS & HASHIM AMLA surprised everyone with their superb efforts. Amla scored 25(244) & AB scored 43(297). Although, INDIA won that test match by 377 runs the efforts of Hashim Amla & AB Devilliers were unforgettable. The same man who scored 149 off just 44 balls for SA, played almost 50 overs to score only 43 runs. That shows the incredible character of Abraham Benjamin Devilliers. His innings of 43 off 297 are the second all-time slowest test innings.

AB De Villiers Sudden Retirement:
May 23, 2018, is a sad day for Cricket when he announced his retirement from the big stage.
On May 23, 2018, with just a year to go for the 2019 World Cup, he announced a shock retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. ‘After 114 Test matches, 228 ODIs and 78 T20 Internationals.
He said in a video message :
”it is time for others to take over. I have had my turn, and to be honest, I am tired,”
It was shocking for every person who is attached to cricket. With less than a year ago for the biggest event ie; Cricket World Cup, how can someone bid farewell to International Cricket? His fans were very disappointed with this decision. He signed contracts with different league teams around the globe after announcing retirement from International Cricket. He was criticized by many fans for this decision. Many said he was not patriotic etc.
If we think neutrally, then this decision was surprising. and the last line “TO BE HONEST, I’M TIRED” …. what did he want to say? Perhaps he was under some kind of mental stress, perhaps he was facing huge pressure.
We don’t know about his mental health. Playing for Your country puts you under pressure and especially when fans expect you to be the BEST.
- “It’s been unbearable at times: the pressure you have to face, performing day in and day out,” De Villiers said…
- “The expectations that you put on yourself, from fans, from the country, from coaches,” he said ………..
- “It is huge, and it’s something that’s on your mind all the time as a cricketer. And it’s something that I’m not going to miss” he said …….
- “I’m very happy to have stepped away. Absolutely no regrets,” De Villiers said.———–
- SOUTH AFRICAN coach Mark Boucher told the reason for ABD’s decision of full & final retirement.
- “AB has his reasons, which I respect. Unfortunately, he’s no longer in the mix. I say unfortunately because I think we all agree that he’s still one of the best – if not the best – T20 players in world cricket. But he alluded to being concerned about coming in ahead of other players who have been a part of the system. I don’t think it sat well with him, which I understand,” Boucher
Mark Boucher’s statement coming on 18 MAY 2021, confirms that the Chapter of AB DEVILLIERS Career as far as International Cricket is concerned is CLOSED
